Trupanion Claim Denied? An Overview of Asking for a Review

On this page

If Trupanion has denied your pet's claim, this guide explains how to understand the decision and organize a clear request for review. We are not affiliated with Trupanion. Facts about Trupanion below are quoted from its public website with a link; anything we couldn't confirm is marked for checking. Always follow the instructions in your own denial letter and policy.

How Trupanion describes pre-existing conditions

Many denials involve pre-existing conditions. Trupanion's public FAQ says a pre-existing condition is "any illness, condition, or injury for which signs or evidence of their potential manifestation existed within the 18 months prior to your policy's effective date or applicable waiting periods," and that it can also be "an injury or recurrence of an injury that occurred prior to your pet's coverage effective date" (Trupanion).

The same page says that "actual eligibility for any condition cannot be determined until a claim is submitted," and that Trupanion requests records from past veterinarians at enrollment, with a claims specialist reviewing them to assess pre-existing conditions (Trupanion).

It also says that if you "feel that a condition was mistakenly added to your pet's record as pre-existing," you can contact Trupanion (Trupanion).

Your policy document is the binding version. Check its wording against the FAQ.

Step 1: Identify the reason for denial

Common reasons may include a pre-existing condition, a policy exclusion, or missing records. Write down the exact wording of the reason and any record entry or policy section it mentions. If the reason isn't clear, ask Trupanion in writing to explain which record and which policy provision it relied on.

Step 2: Check Trupanion's review process

Look for instructions in your denial letter on how to request a review, where to send it and any time limit.

Step 3: Build a timeline

Line up:

  • Policy effective date and any waiting period.
  • Date of the record entry Trupanion cited.
  • The 18-month look-back described in Trupanion's FAQ, if the denial is pre-existing (Trupanion).
  • Date symptoms of the claimed condition began, diagnosis and treatment.

This helps you see whether the cited entry falls within the period described, and makes your request easy to follow.

Step 4: Ask your vet about any disputed record

If you think an old entry has been linked to the wrong condition, ask your veterinarian whether they agree and would write a short letter in their own words. Trupanion's FAQ includes an example where a later condition was eligible because claims specialists "could find a medical disconnect" from an old injury (Trupanion). That is an example on their site, not a promise about your claim.

Step 5: Write and send your request

Keep it short:

  1. Policy number, claim number, pet's name and dates.
  2. "I am requesting a review of the decision dated [date]."
  3. The specific points you disagree with, backed by dates and documents.
  4. List of attachments: denial letter, records, invoices, vet letter.
  5. A request for a written explanation of the outcome.

Send it the way your denial letter or Trupanion instructs, and keep copies with the date sent.

Step 6: If you need more help

Trupanion lists its customer care team as available 24/7 on its pre-existing conditions page (Trupanion). Policyholders with concerns about claim handling can also contact their state insurance department.

If you would like help pulling this together, you can start your appeal pack: upload your denial letter, policy and vet records, and we prepare the documents for you to review and send.
